it's me again. The late Alasdair Maclean had a phrase for it in his book "Night Falls in Ardnamurchan" not referring to Inverness in particular, but it will do as well as any: "one's first awareness is not of city dwelling as such but of undirected sprawl (which is strange given the numbers and activity of the planners). One comes across the town's extruded guts spilled out on to the land, digesting acres as they go" Jane Munro
